I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt

2b of your confidential telegram No. 148 of 31st August, 1937,

notifying me of the impending arrival of Mr. R. G. Howe

Counsellor of the Embassy at Nanking.

Mr. Howe arrived at 11 a. m. on 7th September,

1937, in the Imperial Airways aeroplane and I was glad -

to be able to entertain him to luncheon together with

Major General Bartholomew and Commodore Dicken.

We were

later joined by Mr. Blunt, Consul-General in Canton, who

had come down specially by a British gunboat.

After a full discussion of many points of

current interest Mr. Howe left at 7 p. m. on the same day

by H.M.S. "Daring", for Shanghai.
